Leukotrienes and Inflammation –A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Leukotrienes, together with the prostaglandins and other related compounds, are derived from 20 carbon(eicosa) fatty acids that contain double bonds (enoic). Hence this group of substances is called theeicosanoids. The name leukotriene derives original discovery these in white bloodcells (polymorphonuclear leucocytes) fact they all have common 4 (hence the4 subscript), 3 which a conjugated triene structure. Leukotrienes do not exist preformed cells. They formed breakdown arachidonic acid, polyunsaturated carbon acid. In itsesterified form, acid bound to phospholipids cell membranes. Both immunologicaland non-immunological stimuli can release membrane by activatingphospholipase A2. glucocorticosteroid drugs inhibit phospholipase A2 thereby decrease theproduction leukotrienes hence leukotriene-mediated responses. Generally, inflammation leadsto vasodilation, vascular hyperpermeability, increased blood flow recruitment leukocytes inflamedsites. These events cause enhanced production cytokines, chemokines, chemical mediators lipidmediators such as LTs prostaglandins. Acute occurs over short time (seconds, minutesand hours). contrast, chronic long-lasting inflammatory immune response thatoccurs months years results diverse diseases including asthma, allergies, atherosclerosis, arthritis, obesity, cancer age-related AMD. review article we aimed tohighlight evidence implicates physiological function also disease processes.

5-lipoxygenase-derived leukotrienes: mediators also of atherosclerotic inflammation.
Atherogenesis is now viewed as the outcome of hypercholesterolemia in combination with inflammation of the vessel wall; an intertwined sequence of events leads to fatty streaks, which may develop to atherosclerosis.1 Several recent studies have implicated lipoxygenases in this process. Mammalian lipoxygenases have two principal functions.2 One is to modify membranes by peroxidation reactions; 1...
متن کاملP 74: Neuro-Inflammation and Quality of Life-A Narrative Review
Neuro-inflammation is a growing concern that is the result of nervous tissue inflammation. Some common causes that induce this problem are toxic metabolites, aging, autoimmunity, air pollution, et cetera. Glial cells and a group of proteins which are called cytokines are associated in neuro-inflammation. Some nervous diseases such as: Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Multiple Sclero...
متن کاملGranulomatous inflammation--a review.
The granulomatous inflammatory response is a special type of chronic inflammation characterised by often focal collections of macrophages, epithelioid cells and multinucleated giant cells. In this review the characteristics of these cells of the mononuclear phagocyte series are considered, with particular reference to the properties of epithelioid cells and the formation of multinucleated giant...
متن کاملThe importance of leukotrienes in airway inflammation in a mouse model of asthma
Inhalation of antigen in immunized mice induces an infiltration of eosinophils into the airways and increased bronchial hyperreactivity as are observed in human asthma. We employed a model of late-phase allergic pulmonary inflammation in mice to address the role of leukotrienes (LT) in mediating airway eosinophilia and hyperreactivity to methacholine. Allergen intranasal challenge in OVA-sensit...
متن کاملLeukotrienes and kidney diseases
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review will critically highlight the role of leukotrienes as mediators of renal diseases and drug nephrotoxicity. It will also discuss the recently identified mechanism of cysteinyl leukotrienes induction and action, and will propose clinical implementation of these findings. RECENT FINDINGS Since last reviewed in 1994, leukotrienes were shown to mediate drug-associated...
